In the expensive areas of New York appeared dangerous mice

New research has shown that mice in homes in New York are carrying antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can cause life-threatening gastroenteritis in humans.

These rodents throughout the city are carriers of several types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, writes Daily Mail.

The study revealed that the most viruses are carried by mice from the rich Chelsea region. Scientists say that some identified infections can be transmitted from mice to humans, but how often this happens needs to be clarified.

Therefore, doctors advise to slightly reduce the concentration of attention on rats in the city and pay attention to mice that live in many apartments.

For a year, researchers collected 416 mice from residential buildings at seven different locations in New York. After analyzing their faeces, they found that rodents carried a huge amount of bacteria, including C. difficile, E. coli, Shigella, as well as Salmonella.

In addition, antibiotic resistance genes have been found in these bacteria.

Infection with salmonella through animal feces, in particular mice, is very common. However, according to scientists, the concentration of these bacteria in the feces of mice in New York is several times higher than in other cities.

C. difficile-infections are most often transmitted between patients in hospitals, but as it turned out, mice can be their carriers.

In total, 36 viruses were found in the feces of mice in New York, including 6, new types of viruses that cannot be transmitted to humans but infect dogs, chickens and pigs. That is, it is possible that mice acquired these viruses from other animals or can transmit them to them.

According to the authors of the study, New Yorkers are more concerned about rats because they are larger and more visible, but from a public health point of view, mice are much more dangerous.
