Ukraine introduces biometric control for foreigners

Ukraine will introduce biometric control for foreigners crossing the Ukrainian border, said President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council on July 10.

“We are talking about strengthening control over the entry and exit and stay of citizens of other states on the territory of Ukraine - we are introducing biometric control for all citizens who cross the Ukrainian border,” сообщил The president.

“We have to take biometric data, including fingerprints, digital photography. This will significantly strengthen the capabilities for the fight against terrorism,” the head of state said and expressed confidence that the prepared draft decisions will find clear understanding and support in society.

The Council of National Security and Defense of Ukraine (NSDC) decided to introduce a new procedure for crossing the border of Ukraine on biometric passports.

“It is clear that first of all this will concern Russian citizens,” NSDC Secretary Alexander Turchynov told reporters, the correspondent reports. LIGA.net.

A pre-electronic registration system will also be introduced.

“A Russian citizen who wants to visit Ukraine will have to register in advance and provide the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the necessary data. In addition, a requirement will be introduced for mandatory registration of Russian citizens who are on the territory of Ukraine at the place of their temporary stay, and they will also need to provide information about movement within the territory of Ukraine,” Turchynov said.

He stressed that such decisions were made for security reasons.

“This system is associated with increased security. After the terrorist attacks and aggression within the framework of the hybrid war that the Russian Federation is waging against us. This is necessary so that saboteurs, terrorists, and spies cannot cross our border with false documents,” said the NSDC Secretary.

Turchinov said that the system will work no later than 1 in January next year.
