Trump urged to declare a state of emergency because of drug addiction in the US

President Trump is urged to declare a state of emergency to combat the epidemic of opioid overdoses.

The call for the introduction of provisions comes from the commission considering the opioid crisis that Trump created by decree in March. The commission was led by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

In the 10-page report The Commission describes the catastrophic situation of American society caused by the spread of opioid drugs in all 50 states. Based on figures from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the following are reported:

• Every day, 142 Americans die from a drug overdose;
• The number of opioid prescriptions prescribed by doctors increased 4 times from 1999 of the year;
• Between 2015 and 2017, 560 people died from drug overdoses—more than the entire population of Atlanta, Georgia;
• Drug overdose now kills more people than car accidents and weapons combined.

Christie and his team of commissioners argue that the state of emergency will allow the Trump administration to take the bold steps necessary to deal with the overdose crisis, and to force Congress to take this issue seriously.

“It will also awaken every American to a simple thought: If this tragedy has not yet happened to you or your family, without courageous action on the part of everyone, it will soon,” the report said.

By a state of emergency decree, the US government could quickly move to expanding the number of inpatient medical places available to people suffering from drug addiction. The Commission calls on states to allow discarding existing exemptions in Medicaid.

The commission's first report was published on Monday. The report provides tough language for doctors who are prescribing pharmaceutical painkillers in record quantities, indicating that 4 out of every 5 new heroin addicts start their habit with prescription pills. "Mr. President, this crisis began in our nation's health care system," it said.

This suggests that most of the problems are related to the lack of education and understanding among doctors and dentists. The Commission proposes that the CDC be tasked with preparing a new set of training standards that set out detailed guidelines for safe dosing of drugs and doses.
