Trump called the meeting productive, adding that he had appointed a group that would meet at the weekend and continue negotiations on budget negotiations.

On January 4, the House of Representatives passed a law on government funding, but did not pay Trump's cost of building the border wall.

“We have completed a long and sometimes difficult conversation with the president. We agreed that we would continue our negotiations, but Democrats understand that we cannot solve this problem until we open the government, and we have been clear about that,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after the meeting.

Before the meeting, the leader of the Senate Majority Mitch McConnell stressed that the Senate would not approve any draft budget approved by the House without the approval of the President.

“Any viable compromise must receive the president's approval before it receives our votes,” he said.

Political instability is exacerbating economic problems, with analysts warning of possible closures of several government departments and agencies that could significantly disrupt the executive branch, as well as the risks that the shutdown poses to the stock market and foreign trade.

Pelosi said that the Senate and Trump must agree to adopt a law on government funding without allocating money to build the wall.

“We do not intend to create a wall. Does anyone else have doubts that we will not build a wall?” the speaker said.

But the line of the White House is also unshakable. Vice President Mike Pence said that "if there is no wall, there will be no deal."

Polls show that most Americans are against the border wall, although Republicans strongly support it.
