Boston marathon attack: court may restore death sentence to Chechen organizer

The US Supreme Court agreed to consider the issue of reinstating the death sentence imposed on the Boston Marathon suicide bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Writes about it Air force.

Three people were killed and over 260 were injured when two bombs planted by Tsarnaev and his brother exploded at the finish line in 2013.

Tsarnaev was found guilty and sentenced to deathbut the verdict was cancelled Federal Court of Appeals.

The Justice Department under Donald Trump has appealed the decision.

Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlane, both Kyrgyz-American citizens of Chechen origin, planted bombs near the finish of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.

Three days later, Tamerlane was killed in a shootout with the police.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev escaped and was captured a day later when he was found hiding in a boat in the backyard of a house in Watertown, a suburb of Boston.

A jury sentenced Tsarnaev to death by lethal injection in 2015, but that sentence was overturned by an appellate court last year. The court stated that the trial judge had not excluded the jury, who had already concluded that Tsarnaev was guilty.

In October, while Trump was still president, the Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to reopen the case.

While Trump supported such capital punishment during his tenure, President Joe Biden said he would push for the abolition of the death penalty.

In their petition, Justice Department lawyers called the Tsarnaev case "one of the most important terrorism prosecutions in our country's history."

The Supreme Court very rarely hears the cases that it is asked to consider.

However, the judges agreed to hear oral arguments and decide by June next year whether to reinstate the original death sentence or uphold the appeal court's decision to review the sentence in a lower court.

Tsarnaev will spend the rest of his life in prison, regardless of the decision of the Supreme Court.
