The construction industry suffers from a shortage of workers. Construction companies faced severe labor shortages, rising labor costs, and rising housing costs for consumers.

“There is a serious labor shortage in the market right now. This is a real problem that ultimately costs consumers dearly,” says National Association of Home Builders CEO Jerry Howard.

When the housing market burst almost 10 years ago, the construction of new homes stopped, leaving many builders out of work. Some of them moved into the automotive industry, others into the energy sector.

“The construction workers took any job they could find. They just needed to feed their family,” says Howard.

Foreign workers, most of them from Mexico and other countries in the Americas, returned home during the recession. “The Mexican economy has improved during this time, so construction companies have nothing to offer workers. In addition, immigration policies complicate paperwork,” explains Alan Lang, executive vice president of the construction corporation Taylor Morrison Home Corporation.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, in April 2006, about 3,4 million workers were employed in the construction industry. Last month, the same figure was 2,7 million people.

As demand for new homes in the United States continues to grow, many cities face housing shortages. The lack of workers means that building houses takes more time. The construction industry is forced to turn to non-profit organizations like the Institute of Home Builders to attract more workers.

90% of people who are certified as builders in the United States immediately find a job. In some states, starting salaries range from $ 30 thousand to $ 50 thousand.
