Two dead: deadly salmonella outbreak in 48 states
Two people died and 768 fell ill during a nationwide Salmonella outbreak, reports USA Today with reference to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Recently, the CDC has published updates regarding two separate outbreaks due to contact with birds in a private yard and dog treats - pork ears.
According to the latest CDC report, the outbreak has now spread to 48 states. A total of 768 people suffered, of which 122 were hospitalized. Two deaths were reported, one occurred in Texas, the second in Ohio.

Since 2000, more than 75 outbreaks of Salmonella infections have been associated with contact with poultry in a private yard.
In Tennessee, 55 people got sick. In Ohio, where 62 is affected, the largest number of infections is recorded.
24% of those surveyed who are sick are children under the age of 5, reports the CDC.

Federal health officials say that children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, people older than 65 years, as well as people with weakened immune systems often suffer from severe forms of salmonellosis.
CDC recommends the following precautions
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and rinse the soap well with water immediately after touching the birds or anything in the environment. Use hand sanitizer if you do not have access to soap and water.
Do not let the birds inside the house. Be especially careful and keep birds away from cooking, storing, or serving food or beverages, such as in kitchens and in patios.
