Florida's Sheriff Investigates Colleagues' Reaction to School Shooting
Cattle Israel, County Sheriff in Florida, where 14 February 19 year old teen shot 17 schoolchildren promised to personally investigate all cases where employees of his department responded improperly and ignored signals about the unstable condition of the shooter, which the agency received a few weeks before the crime. He writes about it Vote America.
“We will investigate all the actions of our aides,” Israel said.
He also commented on the deed of one of Scott Peterson employeeswho remained on the street, not daring to enter the school building in Parkland, to try to stop the shooter Nicholas Cruise.
“I am sick of the thought that he did not enter,” Israel said to Peterson, describing his actions as “dereliction of duty”.
The sheriff said that when he saw the video in which Peterson was at the school during the shooting, he removed him from work without pay. Peterson resigned.
Israel said district investigators are also studying reports that, at the very least, three other assistants The sheriff arrived at the scene, but did not enter the school when tragedy unfolded there.
In addition, he said, investigators are investigating 18 calls received by the county sheriff’s office several weeks before the shooting. The callers reported that, in their opinion, Cruz was accumulating an arsenal of weapons and could have attacked the school.
In the US, discussions are escalating about what the reaction should be in such cases, to prevent school shooting in the future, but whether the killings will lead Congress to take action is a question that remains open. In a country where the right to own weapons is enshrined in the Constitution, lawmakers do not like the idea of tightening control over weapons, despite previous massacres that have occurred in recent years.
President Donald Trump offers to arm some teachers, who are good with weapons, and pay them bonuses so that they carry a concealed weapon and are ready to confront the shooter. Trump has said he wants to leave it up to states to decide whether to arm teachers, but Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Trump supporter, has said he opposes the idea.
“I am against the arming of teachers. My main priority is the work of law enforcement, ”he said. “Let the law enforcement system deal with our safety, and the teachers will teach.”
