A family from California received an account in 13 of thousands of dollars for using the mobile Internet while on holiday in Vietnam, despite the fact that they set their phones to “Flight” mode.

Vivian Chung and her children recently returned to California from Vietnam, where they celebrated the 84 birthday of the mother of the woman and received a roaming bill from T-Mobile for 13 470 dollars, writes ABC News.

Chung was at a loss because of what had happened, because, according to her, her family constantly kept their phones in “Flight” mode, because they knew that roaming could be very expensive.

According to T-Mobile, an invoice was issued in just half an hour of mobile Internet, which the family used during the flight over Vietnam.

The woman suggested that her teenage son took advantage of the data, but the boy insists that he did nothing and kept the phone in “Flight” mode throughout the trip. Nicholas admitted that during the flight to Vietnam he played games on his phone, but they were offline and did not use the Internet.

When the journalists checked the data usage on the phones of travelers, they found that some Apple mobile applications that do not require an Internet connection still use mobile data to update software, social networks and send advertising if the mobile data transfer mode is on, regardless of whether the flight is activated or not. Most likely, the game that the guy played on his iPhone during the flight belongs to such applications.

When Chung asked T-Mobile to review the bill, the company agreed to cut it to 3800 dollars. After intervening in the situation of journalists in T-Mobile agreed to cancel the bill.

Apple has advised mobile phone users to turn off "cellular data" in the settings section of their phone in addition to turning on Airplane mode to ensure that the data is not being used by any app.
