There are currently 19 volcanoes erupting simultaneously in the world: is this normal?
More than a dozen volcanoes are erupting simultaneously around the world, and three new ones joined the list this week, reports Newsweek.
Smithsonian Institute's Global Volcanism Program tracks new eruptions and updates the list of volcanoes that are currently erupting. The latest update shows three new eruptions, bringing the total number of simultaneous eruptions on the list to 19.
Normal or not
New volcanic eruptions have led some people to express their concerns on social media.
“Volcanoes are erupting simultaneously in Italy, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Russia, the Philippines, etc. Below is a map of volcanic activity in 2013 and 2023. Completely abnormal, isn’t it?” — one person wrote on X.
In fact, it is not uncommon for several volcanoes to erupt at the same time. Experts hastened to dispel all fears.
“Volcanoes erupt all over the world all the time. This is fine. That's what Earth's volcanoes do: they erupt, volcanologist and science journalist Robin George Andrews wrote on X. “And there are plenty of them, and some of them will always erupt.” You know what would be weird? If there were absolutely no volcanic eruptions.”
The program produces a weekly report on the volcanic activity of erupting volcanoes. Volcanoes included in the database must meet certain criteria, such as the occurrence of ash, signs of new activity, exhibiting a change in activity, or a change in hazard level. The report does not include all volcanic activity because the report does not list more than a dozen volcanoes that have not shown continuous eruptive activity for decades or longer.

“The number of volcanoes erupting now is normal,” said program director Ben Andrews. “There are currently 46 eruptions, and over the past 30 years there have typically been about 40-50 eruptions at any given time. Since 1991, between 56 and 88 eruptions have occurred annually. There have been 67 eruptions this year and 2022 in 85.”
Andrews said media reports and improved photographs and videos of the eruptions could attract more public attention.
The three new erupting volcanoes include the undersea volcano on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, Fagradalsfjall in Iceland and Klyuchevskoy Volcano in Russia.
Japan
An undersea volcano in the Japanese Volcanic Islands exhibited a period of increased agitation before its October 30 eruption.
The accumulated magma finally broke through the surface of the water, forming a new island.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), volcanic tremors have been recorded on Iwo Jima every two minutes since mid-October.
Russia
The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula began erupting earlier this month, spewing massive plumes of ash 12 kilometers above sea level and forcing the closure of several schools. The volcano is the highest active volcano in Eurasia.

Iceland
The Fagradalsfjall volcano has not yet begun to erupt, but authorities have evacuated the town of Grindavik as the volcano shows signs of disturbance, including thousands of earthquakes and ground deformations. This indicates the movement of magma. The volcano last erupted in July, and since 2021 eruptions have occurred approximately annually.
