Russia Today channel refused to register as a foreign agent in the US

TV channel Russia Today did not fulfill at the prescribed time the requirements of the US Department of Justice to register themselves as a foreign agent, reports CNN with reference to the documents of the Ministry of Justice of the country.

Ministry of Justice has given time to the TV channel Russia Today Register before 17 October. According to publicly available documents DOJ, RT has not yet registered.

In a statement, the channel says it deliberately resists registering in the United States. “Our lawyers are doing everything possible for RT not to register under the American Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), the dialogue continues. On their advice, we are not discussing further details at this time,” RT head Anna Belkina said in a statement.

According to FARA experts, the US Justice Department may, in response, either issue a second warning or initiate civil or criminal proceedings against RT.

FARA was originally created a few decades ago to prevent the influence of foreign propaganda on American society.

Companies or individuals who are believed to work on behalf of a foreign government in the United States are required to disclose their funding and relations with a foreign government. Registration with FARA does not prohibit the publication of news. In fact, several other media sponsored by foreign governments, such as the Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Chinese newspaper The china daily, also registered with FARA and continue their work.

Earlier, on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised to "mirror and quickly" respond to the harassment of the Russian media (RT and Sputnik) in the USA, reports "Rain«.

At the end of September Twitter reported to Congress on the cost of RT advertising their accounts among US users. According to the company's calculations, the channel in 2016 spent thousands of dollars on 274 advertising. Another 100 thousand dollars went to the political advertising channel in Facebook.

Then the chief editor of RT Margarita Simonyan, commenting on the report Twitter, called it “monstrous information.” “We spent money on our advertising campaigns, as all normal media organizations in the world do,” she said.

Later, the US Department of Justice demanded that the channel register as a foreign agent.
