Russia will block Facebook for storing data from Russians abroad

Facebook in 2018, he must comply with the Russian law on the localization of personal data, otherwise the resource will stop working in Russia, the publication told reporters Inerfax Head of Roskomnadzor Alexander Zharov.

“The law is binding on everyone. In any case, we will either ensure that the law is implemented, or the company will stop operating on the territory of the Russian Federation, as, unfortunately, happened with LinkedIn. There are no exceptions here,” Zharov said, answering a question from Interfax about the social network’s deadlines for fulfilling Facebook relevant law.

“We will strive to ensure that Law 242 by the company Facebook was complied with. In 2018, everything will be for sure,” Zharov emphasized. He explained that deadlines have been set for solving this problem, and they will be met.

“We are well aware that Facebook has a significant number of users in the Russian Federation, on the other hand, we understand that this is not a unique service, there are other social networks,” Zharov explained.

He said that the company’s position is that they are considering options for implementing this law; no official letters have been received from them. “In terms of inspections in this area, we have until the end of 2017 Facebook '“But no, in 2018 we will think about it, maybe we’ll check it,” Zharov clarified.

He recalled that the company Twitter has already set a deadline for the localization of personal data - mid-2018. “We are proceeding from a position of goodwill, since the company wrote us an official letter, so we will not check it until this moment. And after this moment, we’ll check it right away,” Zharov said.

In September 2015, amendments to the Law “On Personal Data” came into force. According to them, any Russian or foreign company focused on working with Russian users must ensure the recording, systematization, accumulation, storage, clarification of personal data of Russians using databases located on the territory of the Russian Federation.
