Russia tried to incite racial hatred in the United States with Pokemon Go

During the presidential race in the United States, Russia tried to influence the sympathies of Americans not only through social networks, but also through the game popular in 2016. Pokemon Go.

The game was used to sow racial and social hatred in society, reports CNN, referring to the results of their own investigation.

Social media campaign "Don't shoot at us" (Do not shoot us), which served itself as part of the project Black Lives Matter, was created by pro-Kremlin agents and trolls from an organization associated with Russia Internet Research Agency. To promote it, all the methods available on the Internet were used: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and even Pokemon Go. American intelligence agencies have confirmed the connection of numerous “Don’t shoot at us” accounts with Internet Research Agencywhich does not hide its ties with the Kremlin.

To incite social hatred on the page in YouTube The Don't Shoot Us movement contains more than 200 videos showing incidents of alleged police brutality.

With even more imagination, the owners of the account approached the initiation of racial hatred donotshoot.us at tumblr. Subscribers were invited to play Pokemon Go, however, the places for training and catching Pokemon were directly related to those areas where cases of police brutality against black Americans were recorded.

Moreover, users were asked to call their Pokemon names of real victims of police brutality - for example, Eric garner. Winners of the competition were to receive gift cards. Amazon.

Game developers Pokemon go disowned participation in this competition and stated that its organizers, without their consent, used images of Pokemon for advertising purposes.
