According to the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, whose goal is to improve bilateral relations, writes "Voice of America".
In conversation, Lavrov "stressed the unacceptability of the actions of the American authorities who arrested the Russian citizen, M. V. Butina, in the United States on the basis of trumped-up charges, and the need for her speedy release."

In addition, the diplomats "also discussed the situation in Syria and around it, including the possible interaction of Russia and the United States together with other countries to solve humanitarian problems in the SAR, and tasks related to supporting efforts to promote the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."
Мария Бутина accused in violation of the US law, which prescribes registration as a "foreign agent" of all those who are trying to influence US policy by order of a foreign government. According to the prosecution, Butina worked with senior representatives of Russia to influence US policy toward Russia.
