Police identify a woman from a red suitcase found in Connecticut
On Thursday, a 24-year-old woman from the state of New York was identified by a medical expert as someone whose body (hand and foot) was found earlier this week in a large red suitcase on the side of a road in the prestigious Greenwich, Connecticut.
According to ABC News, Valerie Reyes from New Rochelle, New York, went missing on January 30, the day after she was last seen.
The cause of the woman’s death could not be determined immediately, but after the terrible find in the suitcase, Greenwich police captain Robert Berry said that the police are investigating death as murder.
“Last night her family was informed of the positive identification results. They are obviously devastated by the loss of Valerie and we offer our sincere condolences,” Berry said. “The Greenwich Police Department is working to identify those responsible for Valerie’s death.”
Tuesday traffic police officers stumbled on the remains of a woman, finding a suitcase in 10-15 feet (5-6 meters) from the side of the road. Reyes was dressed, but her arms and legs were tied.
NYPD Midtown North Precinct tweeted Reyes in the hope that someone would find out and help get information about the woman’s last days.
"This area is relatively safe, so it's quite unusual to find a body close to where you live, it's very significant," said Lisa Scullin, who lives in the city.
“We should be the safest city in America, or at least one of them,” said Melissa Klinka, who is also a member of the Greenwich community. “Something like this would shock people.”
Greenwich with a population of just under 63 000 people are located near the Long Island Strait. This is a rich city, which houses the offices of many hedge funds and financial firms.
