Border guards will suspend the practice of transferring migrant parents to courts

“We are suspending prosecutions of adults who are family members until ICE accelerates the provision of resources so we can maintain custody,” the source said.

In turn, Sarah Ishur Floris, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice, said the prosecution policy was not suspended.

"There has been no change to the 'zero tolerance' policy of targeting adults who cross the border illegally instead of claiming asylum at any other port of entry at the border," she said.

Since ICE has limited capacity to detain an increased flow of migrants, according to an anonymous source, most parents and migrant children are likely to be released from custody while they are awaiting court hearings.

The decision to suspend the prosecution of parents with children was made by the Department of Homeland Security due to logistical reasons, since, according to the source, “it is not possible” to take the children to federal courtrooms while their parents appear before a judge.

Adults who illegally cross the border will continue to face offense charges in accordance with a “zero tolerance” policy.

Recall, yesterday President Donald Trump signed a decree that prohibits border guards from separating parents and migrant childrenthat illegally crossed the border with the United States.

Note that according to the Department of Homeland Security, from May 5 to June 9, as a result of the family separation policy, more than 2300 children were separated from their parents.
