Crying children in cages: frightening installations appeared on the streets of New York

In New York, art installations of the most dystopian kind appeared: young children, curled up under foil blankets, lay in cages with chains. All this is accompanied by the sound of the cry of detained illegal immigrants coming from the speakers.

Such artwork appeared on the sidewalks in different parts of New York, total 24 object placed in the city, writes The Washington Post.

Installations 12 June were placed in front of the offices of news organizations, Google and in the busiest areas of the city. They symbolize migrant children detained by federal authorities on the southern US border.

“Dad,” a child cried through tears in one of the recordings in the installation. This is not a production, but a real cry of a baby, which was recorded in one of the child detention centers last year. In the recording, Border Patrol agents can be heard joking with each other as children cry over being separated from their parents. The audiotape sparked enormous public outrage and demands for the Department of Homeland Security to change its policy.

The sound was so “intrusive” and “alarming”, as stated by the local television station, that the camera crew kept away from the installation so that the sound from it would not drown out the words of the correspondent.

The figures of the children in the works are made of paper and are very similar to the children lying under the blankets, some of them include ponytail hair that looks out from under the blanket.

City police brought several objects from Manhattan and Brooklyn, including one that was installed opposite the Barclays Center. At the same time, objects located near the offices of CNN, Fox News, Newsweek and other media companies still remained standing.

For the dismantling of one installation, the police had to use an electric saw to cut the chain, with which the cell was attached to the stand in the parking lot.

The campaign is developed by advertising agency Badger & Winters and is aimed at supporting the efforts of RAICES, which provides non-profit legal aid to immigrants and refugees in Texas.

“The litmus test of any society is how it treats children. By deeming it normal to keep children in cages, we are walking the path of denying the rights of all children,” said RAICES Executive Director Jonathan Ryan.

Last week, federal officials said they would open three new shelters to house unaccompanied children from 3000 to 4000 in an attempt to cope with overcrowding in existing border agencies. Shelters will be located at two US military bases and at a facility in South Texas.

In this fiscal year, border guards detained more than 56 000 unaccompanied minors, which is 74% more than in the same period last year.
