The Pentagon is investigating the publication of hundreds of candid photos of female marines

The US Department of Defense and the Naval Criminal Investigation Service are investigating information that several marines were distributing candid photos of female colleagues on the social network on Facebook.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands of pictures were published in the closed group “Marines United” and were accompanied by vulgar and aggressive comments with sexual overtones, reports with the BBC.

The number of comments under the photo was over 2,5 thousand.

Currently, the group, which included about 30 thousands of active and retired marines, is not functioning.

The US Navy Criminal Investigation Service has launched an investigation into the incident.

The group was exposed by the non-profit organization The War Horse Marine Veteran Thomas Brennan. In January, one of the group members published a link to a folder hosted on Google Drive, with photos of many naked marines.

Other participants podnachivali each other to add more photos, they also indicated the names, ranks and divisions of women with pictures. Thus, more than 20 women were identified.

Currently, the folder with photos is deleted, and Facebook and Google have deleted the accounts of those who posted the pictures.

Some photographs were supposedly taken surreptitiously. Others were probably made with the consent of women, but published without permission.

The War Horse organization contacted women with photos from 5: 2 of them suggested that they could be published by their former partners; others expressed concerns that their accounts had been hacked.

The younger corporal, Marisa Vojtek, said that the pictures were copied from her Instagram without permission and published on a page in a closed group, where she found comments with hints of sexual assault and rape.

“Even if I could, I will not sign a new contract. Because of online sexual harassment, the Marine Corps no longer exists for me,” Wojtek said.

After the incident, the Marine Corps contacted a member of the Organization of Veterans of the Marine Corps, who published a link to a folder with photographs, he was dismissed from his post, reports Reveal News.

Marine Corps in official statement expressed deep concern about the incident, promised to make every effort to investigate the incident, and also urged women to report if they feel harassed or have suffered from sexual violence.
