Maria Daume: from a Siberian prison to the first female marines in the United States
18-year-old American woman with Russian roots Maria Daume became the first female marine in the United States, she graduated from the 13 Marine School in January 2017.
Now she is going to 3-month infantry training, after which she will be able to fight on equal terms with men in hot spots, if necessary.
Maria and her twin Nikolai were born in a Siberian prison in a strict prisoner in 1998, reports the publication Task and purpose.
Their mother died when Mary and Nicholas were 2, and the children were transferred to an orphanage.
When they were 4 years old, they were adopted by an American family and transported children to Long Island, New York.
“I came here thinking that everything would be focused on physical development, I did not think that so many classes would be devoted to history and information about the Marine Corps. This was definitely the hardest part. You should not expect that someone will study for you, it is your job to learn and understand the necessary material,” Maria shared her impressions of the training.
Daume is one of 4 women to graduate as Marines and report for duty as of January 13th. They are the first female Marines in the United States.
“I want to fight the Islamic State.” I think this is a challenge for me, and I want to prove that women can do this,” Daume said about her motivation.
As a teenager, Maria was raising money for people suffering from cancer, then she saw the Marines and realized that it was with such an activity that she wanted to link her future.
Maria had a relatively normal childhood in the US, but she experienced bullying at school due to her adoption and where she was born. This developed the girl’s steely character and endurance. She relieved her emotional stress on the sports field - Daume played basketball, football, softball, field hockey, and took part in sports competitions.
According to her, sport has taught her to soberly assess the situation and remain calm, even if not everything is going according to plan, which is very useful on the battlefield, where she can soon go.
All this knowledge and the desire to become part of the US Marine Corps pushed the girl one of the first to go to a military recruiter when US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter opened access to all military positions for women in December 2015.
Maria says she doesn’t care much about what others say about her decision, she does it for herself and for women who, like her, want to serve in the American army and defend their country in battle. Moreover, she is not the first woman to go to war for her country. Throughout American history, women helped in the defense of their country as best they could.
