Obama promised to ensure a smooth transfer of power to the new president
Barack Obama spoke at the White House after the name of the next US president became known. He congratulated Donald Trump on his victory and said that he personally invited him to the White House on Thursday. Obama said he also directed his staff to work toward a successful transition of power to the newly elected president because a peaceful transition of power is an inherent quality of American democracy and needs to be shown to the world.
Obama expressed confidence that his team managed to make the country much stronger than it was 8 years ago. “We are all one team, the country needs a sense of unity. We're all rooting for Trump to succeed. I will do everything for this,” he added.
In addition, Obama said that he is very proud of a candidate like Hillary Clinton and considers her election campaign to be historic. In his words, "Clinton was a wonderful first lady, an outstanding senator from New York and a great secretary of state."
According to the latest data, the candidate from the Republican Party Trump received the votes of 289 members of the electoral college with the required 270. His rival, Hillary Clinton, who has now received 218 votes, has already congratulated trump with a victory.
