Famous Russian boxer arrested in Los Angeles for drunk driving

This is not the first time Russian boxer and former world light heavyweight champion Sergei Kovalev has encountered the law - he was arrested for drunk driving in Los Angeles on the night of Monday, February 24, writes The Daily Mail.

Kovalev, 36, was released on his own recognizance at about 7:35 local time, about 5 hours after he was stopped by a California patrol.

Kovalev’s legal problems began in 2018 when he was charged with beating a woman in Big Bear, California. This woman, Jamie Fronts, sued him because, according to her, Kovalev did not pay the full amount of $ 650, which they agreed on in exchange for canceling the initial lawsuit for $ 000 million. Presumably, Kovalev and his friend attacked a woman and her dog in Big Bear. Allegedly after paying one contribution in the amount of $ 8, the boxer neglected the rest of the payments.

Kovalev was arrested for a deadly weapon attack in June 2018 after reportedly leaving Frontz with a broken nose, a concussion, and a displaced disc in his neck. Since then, he has denied the allegations, warning his followers on Instagram "not to make hasty conclusions about the situation."

After the arrest, the former champion insists on his innocence. The case is still pending, and he faces up to 4 years in prison if convicted. Kovalev recently changed his lawyers, and on January 7 the upcoming trial was postponed. The next pretrial hearing will take place on April 8th.

Fronz reportedly rejected the sexual claims of married Kovalev at a party, after which he and his friend followed her and attacked. In July, a judge from San Bernardino, California ordered both parties to cooperate on the case.

“At one point, Kovalev pinned Jamie against the couch so that she could not leave,” court documents state.

According to the court, the dog tried to protect the mistress, but Kovalev pushed her and kicked him, and then punched Frontz in the face. Then he and his friend allegedly left, and at that moment the woman called the police. Kovalev was arrested later that night.

Frontz says she was treated in the emergency room for a broken nose, a concussion and serious injuries to her back and neck. According to her Instagram profile, Frontz is a model, blogger and influencer.

Kovalev often trains in Big Bear, where many boxers come during the year.

Kovalev reached the pinnacle of his career when he won a couple of fights against the American light heavyweight champion Andre Ward, but in the end he lost to Ward in 2016, and in 2017 received a technical knockout. In preparation for the rematch, Kovalev was criticized for tweets that included racist and homophobic insults.

Kovalev has a wife, Natalya, and two young children.

It is not clear how much the former champion is getting right now, but earlier he was paid more than $ 1 million for two fights against Ward, as well as a couple of high-profile fights with Alider Alvarez.

According to numerous reports, Kovalev earned $ 3 million for his defeat in 2019 in favor of middleweight boxer Canelo Alvarez. After this fight, Kovalev lost his champion title.
