Children contract E. coli at a California fair: one child dies
In San Diego (California) from the bacteria E. coli 2-year-old boy died, and at least three more children became infected, they all visited the zoo at the county fair, writes CBS News.
The exact source of the bacteria is still being investigated, but all four people infected at the fair visited the local zoo.
The San Diego County Health and Welfare Agency announced four confirmed E. coli cases involving contact with animals. While three cases did not lead to hospitalization, an 2-year-old boy was hospitalized and died from complications on June 24.
Contagious children from 2 to 13 years attended the fair from 8 to 15 in June, and their symptoms manifested from 10 to 16 in June. With 16 Jun, no other symptom reports from other visitors have been reported.

The fair will run until July 4, but the zoo and all other animal zones will be closed.
Symptoms E. coli usually occur through 2-8 days after bacteria enters the body, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk of colibacillosis.
