Radioactive waste found on school grounds in Missouri: children exposed to high levels of radiation
An elementary school in suburban St. Louis that produced nuclear weapons during World War II is seeing significant radioactive contamination, according to a new report from environmental investigation consultants. NBC.

The new report is based on samples taken from the school in August, according to St. Louis Post Dispatch. Boston Chemical did not say who requested or funded the report.
“I was heartbroken,” said Ashley Bernau, president of the school's parent-teacher association, who has a son there. “It sounds so corny, but it takes your breath away.”
The school is located near Coldwater Creek, which was contaminated with nuclear weapons waste during World War II. Waste was dumped at sites near St. Louis Lambert International Airport, next to a creek that flows into the Missouri River. Army Corps of Engineers has been cleaning the stream for over 20 years.
The report Army Corps of Engineers pollution was also found in the area, but at much lower levels, and no samples were taken within 100m of the school. The most recent report included samples taken from the school's library, kitchen, classrooms, fields, and playgrounds.

Levels of the radioactive isotope lead-210, polonium, radium, and other toxins were "much higher" than Boston Chemical had expected. Dust samples taken inside the school were found to be contaminated.
