Electric bikes recalled in the US due to explosions: thousands of people were injured

Nearly 22 e-bikes sold on Amazon, Walmart and Sears are being recalled due to the risk of battery explosions. The edition told in more detail Daily Mail.

The Ancheer e-bike, which is sold at major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Sears, has been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to lithium-ion batteries.

The CPSC has warned consumers that batteries are known to "ignite, explode or spark" and this poses a risk of fire, explosion, burns.

E-bikes, electric scooters and hoverboards killed 2021 people in 48, according to data compiled by the agency. When it began collecting information in 2017, there were only five deaths.

The recalled Ancheer bike has model number AM001907, which can be found in the owner's manual, but not on the bike. The recalled model was sold between January 2016 and June 2022 for up to $930.

It was made in China and distributed by Shenzhen Sailvan Network Technology.

The recall comes two days after the CPSC released a report that showed an increase in ER visits and deaths due to e-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards.

New York City reported in July that there had been 166 lithium battery fires since the start of the year, injuring more than 50 people and at least four dead.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) issued a stern warning to e-bike owners at the time, urging them to immediately stop using an overheated battery and follow the manufacturer's charging and storage instructions.

Mike Fritz, co-founder of consulting firm Human Powered Solutions, said New York City has become the epicenter of e-bike fires due to a massive influx of delivery personnel using battery-powered bikes to haul goods.

There are at least 65 such couriers in the city.

Since many of them are on a low income, they can't afford a new $900 battery and buy it from third party sites that neglect the vital elements for battery life.

Fires do not only happen to e-bikes on the go, but also become a serious problem for those who bring them into houses and apartments.

“There is no way to put out a lithium fire,” Fritz said. - You need to break the connection between the particles of lithium. There is one precaution: never charge the battery unattended when you connect it - do not leave. If there is a failure, you will have time to intervene.”

New York City is considering a ban on electric bikes in public residences. Since 2021, the NYPD has conducted 26 lithium battery fire investigations.

In 2018, an e-bike fire caused 60 firefighters to put out a Maryland house fire.

Fritz, who is a proponent of e-bikes, hopes these incidents don't deter the public from owning the vehicle.

“This is a serious problem, and awareness is the best solution,” he said. “Until there are technical solutions, we must raise awareness.”
