Amazon now lets you buy medical services and insurance

Amazon's months-long effort to acquire One Medical is over - at least for now. The company has officially completed a $3,9 billion acquisition, providing One Medical with a primary healthcare provider with in-person and virtual treatments, as well as lab tests. Successful redemption does not result in any immediate changes to One Medical services other than a temporary $55 discount on annual membership (currently $144).

One Medical is engaged in the provision of primary health care. The provider offers in-person care at various locations in the United States. One Medical makes it easy for people to schedule appointments, renew prescriptions, access up-to-date medical records, and improve health outcomes.

The completion of the deal came just a day after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it would not contest the buyout. However, the regulator is still investigating the deal to look into potential anti-competitive effects and privacy concerns caused by Amazon's access to health data.

An FTC spokesman said the agency will warn Amazon that it is closing the deal at its own risk and could face a challenge from the government later.

Amazon has spent years diving deeper into the health care system. He bought PillPack in 2018 and used the network to launch his own pharmacy service. In 2019, the online shopping heavyweight introduced a healthcare app for employees; Amazon later offered it to other companies. In 2021, the company introduced a dedicated Alexa for healthcare. The purchase of One Medical theoretically completes the picture, allowing Amazon to handle everything from minor doctor appointments to prescriptions.

It's unclear if Amazon can withstand the FTC's challenge. Commission chair Lina Khan is known to be wary of big tech. However, there is no assurance that the FTC will succeed, and it recently lost a bid to block Within's purchase of Meta. However, One Medical is significantly larger than Within, and its healthcare activities raise privacy concerns.
