The Red Army is a film about hockey, about what true friendship and loyalty are and how difficult it is to be a hero of sport.

The film includes interviews with many leading players, such familiar and dear names for us: Vyacheslav Fetisov, his teammates and legendary coaches Viktor Tarasov, Viktor Tikhonov, NHL coach Scotty Bowman.
The protagonist of the film - the legendary Vyacheslav Fetisov, who knew the ups and downs, was the hero who imitated the 80 boys. He proved to Soviet and Russian hockey players that it was possible to work in the West and start living differently.
The Soviet hockey players knew what preparation for a competition is: not seeing for seven months, training until the blood, severe injuries when the coach did not let the player even at his father's funeral ... And during times of restructuring, there was no infrastructure in sports and lack of money. This is the other side of the coin, not visible to the fans.
Many people remember the times when the confrontation between the regimes overstepped the political line and the struggle was on the sports fields. And at a time when the Soviet Union subordinated the countries of Eastern Europe to its regime, the national hockey team scored victories in ice rinks, reinforcing the greatness of Soviet sport and conquering the hearts of millions.
Directed by Gabe Polsky, the son of immigrants from Ukraine, showed in the film documentary footage of such a distant, but such a familiar era that caused an aching feeling of sadness and nostalgia after 50 years.
These shots did not leave indifferent Americans sitting next to me in the cinema when we, born in the USSR, recalled how we lived in communal apartments, washed our hands from a washstand attached to the wall, when festive parades and demonstrations aroused admiration and joy ...
Gabe Polsky - director, producer and screenwriter of the documentary "The Red Army". He is also a producer and one of the directors of the movie “Life in a motel”, which was highly praised by critics and 4 awards at the Rome Film Festival.
