What jobs were eliminated in the US in 2017 year
The unemployment rate in the US as a whole is constantly decreasing, but in some industries there is a decrease in the number of jobs, and these losses in certain states are more significant than in others. The largest decline in employment from August 2016 to August 2017 occurred in eight industries: construction; production; trade, transport and utilities; financial activities; professional and business services; education and medical services; recreational services; government sector.
Edition GO Banking Rates collected a list of states in which from August 2016 of the year to August of 2017, there was the largest reduction in employment.
Building
The construction industry includes employees who are responsible for the construction of buildings, engineering projects and the conclusion of contracts for the sale of real estate. Last year, there was an increase in total employment in the industry, but in 16 states, employment in the construction industry declined.
Leaders among them were:
- South Dakota (employment in the construction industry in the state decreased by 2,9%);
- Nebraska (-2,9%); In both of these states, according to statistics, this decline is not due to the lack of jobs, but to a shortage of professional workers capable of working in the industry.
- Iowa (-7,3%).
Winemaking
The manufacturing industry includes the production of all goods, including food, beverages, textiles, metal products, computer and electronic products, transportation equipment and furniture. The fall in employment in this area is due to the increased level of automation of many processes.
The largest number of jobs in the production sector has decreased in such states:
- West Virginia (-3,2%);
- New York (-4,3%);
- Vermont (-4,4%).
Trade, transport and utilities
This category includes: wholesale and retail workers; employees of companies providing services of all forms of transportation; electrical, gas, plumbing and sewage workers.
Employment in this industry as a whole has grown over the past year, but not in all states, among the regions where it fell, were:
- Oklahoma (-2%);
- Delaware (-2,9%);
- West Virginia (-2,9%).
Financial activities
This area includes all jobs in the insurance and financial services industry.
In most states, employment in this category has increased, but in 10 states there has been a slight decrease in the number of jobs in this area.
Among them:
- Alaska (-2,5%);
- Maine (-2,6%);
- Hawaii (-3,2%).
Professional and business services
The professional and business industry includes legal services, research, architecture, accounting, advertising, design, management and administration.
Decline in employment in this category occurs only in individual states, and not in the industry as a whole. The regions with the largest decline are:
- Maine (-1,7%);
- Mississippi (-2,2%);
- Wyoming (-3,4%).
Education and medical services
Only one state experienced declines in education and health care employment (Wyoming, down 0,7%). This category includes school workers, health care workers and social care workers. Employment in health care overall is growing.
Recreational Services
This category includes jobs in the arts, entertainment and recreation, as well as in the areas of accommodation and food.
The decline in employment in this industry is observed in five US states, the leaders among them are:
- Kentucky (-0,9%);
- Kansas (-2,4%;
- Wyoming (-3,6%).
Government sector
This category includes civil servants, as well as employees of public schools and hospitals. These workers often face difficulties when the state decides to carry out budget cuts, which is what led to a decrease in employment in this area in several US regions, including:
- New Mexico (-1,8%);
- Wyoming (-2,4%);
- Hawaii (-3,1%).
