As in America they call our favorite dishes
The most popular party format in America is potlak. Everyone who comes brings one or two dishes to suit their taste, everything is placed on a common table and the result is a varied menu. I often go to such events (and often host guests myself) and, of course, cook something from our kitchen.
Interestingly, for almost all of our dishes, Americans already have their own names. So, by what names do Americans know our favorite dishes?
Olivie
We do not particularly remember why this favorite salad of the Soviet New Year holidays is called a French name, although there are several legends about this. I also often heard that salad is called differently depending on the ingredients. For example, if he cooks with meat, then this is not Olivier, but Stolichny! Americans do not bother: with sausage, with meat, with salmon or shrimps and red caviar - for them it is all Russian salad!
Dumplings
Meals from dough with various fillings probably exist in all cuisines of the world, but in each kitchen these dishes are called differently. Our dumplings are known by the Americans under the Polish name "perogs", with the emphasis on the letter O. And the Americans buy them already boiled, and in order to "cook" them, according to the Americans, they need to be fried in a pan before serving.
Borscht
Borscht is probably our most popular first course among Americans, due to the fact that Americans generally do not eat first courses. Borscht is considered a “winter soup” because it is hot, rich and filling. In the case of borscht, the Americans did not try to translate this name, but since they do not know how to pronounce the letter “sch”, they call it “borsh”.
Okroshka
Soups are not very popular in the USA, you already know, and the most famous is borscht. But some Americans can feed and okroshka. It is much more realistic than to feed herring under a fur coat! Plus okroshka is much more understandable in summer, when it is hot in the yard - Americans refuse to eat soup at such a time, because it is too rich and hot. And okroshka - just right. And they call it very simply: “cold soup”.
Doctor sausage
I must say at once that I have no idea that an American distinguishes the Doctorate from Amateur or Stolichnaya, except that an American who has lived a year in Russia. But with boiled sausage, as with the product, the American is familiar! I once wrote that the Doctorate's recipe in 1930's was brought by Anastas Mikoyan, people's commissar of the food industry, from the USA! So any “boiled milk” in the USA is called “Bologna”, as a famous type of Italian boiled sausage.
Homemade or smoked sausage
You know, such a sausage with a semi-small small diameter, which happens like smoked or not? Americans also call such a sausage in the Polish manner “Kelbas” or “Kelbas”. Ordinary Americans do not like to understand the varieties of sausage. The whole "boiled" they have: bologna. And among the dried, smoked and similar sausages, they only know pepperoni, salami and kelbas. The first two are Italian, the third is Slavic. I remember how Soviet emigration in the USA was called “sausage”, and here only 4 is a kind of sausage!
Shashlik
Grilled meat Americans are very respected! Every decent homeowner must have a grill in the backyard, on which the father of the family fries steaks, sausages, burgers cutlets, fish, seafood, corn and vegetables for the holidays. Of meat, Americans prefer beef. Pork ribs are popular from pork. Americans call this whole thing in one word: barbecue. Our kebab falls under the same category. Well, especially erudite can still learn kebab in our kebab!
Herring under the fur coat
Herring under a fur coat is a very strange salad for an American. I have no idea how an American would agree to try it at all in his right mind and in sober memory. But let's say you somehow persuaded him to do it. Direct translation of the name of the name of one of my favorite salads is afraid of confusing the American even more, so it is usually translated simply as “seasoned herring” (as a “dressed” salad - dressed herring).
