Israel considers US withdrawal from nuclear deal with Iran as "absolutely correct step"

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman supported the decision of US President Donald Trump, adopted by 8 in May, to withdraw from the agreements on the Iranian nuclear program.

He said this in an interview with the publication Voice of Americaand also shared his opinion on the relations between Israel and Russia and the threat from Iran.

Lieberman stressed that Iran’s nuclear and missile programs pose a real threat to Israel.

“This is a real threat to the State of Israel. These are the missiles that we recently saw aimed at Saudi Arabia. They have already exploded in Riyadh and other places, that is, this is not a mythical, but a real missile. Moreover, Iran is constantly developing its missile system: they are becoming more accurate, more powerful. The range of action is constantly increasing. Therefore, neither we nor the United States can afford to calmly watch how Iran develops its missile program,” the politician said.

In this regard, he is confident that the withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal was “absolutely the right decision, since Iran is a radical country that professes radical Islam.”

“Like all revolutionaries, from Trotsky to Che Guevara and so on, Iran is trying to export its Islamic revolution. And in addition to the nuclear program, it is engaged in parallel, as we have already mentioned, with the development of missile systems and, of course, the constant expansion and undermining of normal, adequate regimes throughout the Middle East. We see their actions in Yemen, actions directed against Saudi Arabia, their constant subversive activities in Iraq, in Lebanon, in Syria. That is, a constant attempt to undermine stability throughout the Middle East, and not only in the Middle East,” Lieberman emphasized.

The Israeli Foreign Minister added that the views on Iran’s actions on the part of European countries and Russia are very different from how Israel and the United States see it.

“In Europe, unfortunately, nothing has changed since 1938, that is, by the same self-deception, Europeans convinced themselves at one time to sign the Munich Agreement with Hitler, which is no different in essence and character from the agreement signed with Iran. As for Russia, Russia has its own interests, we have ours. Unfortunately, on this issue our interests do not coincide at all,” the politician said.

At the same time, Israel, he said, is not very concerned that Russia supports the Bashar Assad regime in Syria, which the Israeli government does not consider a direct threat to its country.

“We are primarily concerned about Iran’s actions in Syria. Iran is trying to turn Syrian territory into a forward springboard against us. We will not allow this. As for the Assad regime, we really, really don’t like it, and I can hardly say that we especially like anyone from our neighbors in the Middle East. At the same time, it is what it is. From my point of view, Assad is a war criminal, responsible for the destruction of half a million of his own citizens. But at the same time, we are not going to interfere in the internal Syrian conflict. Syria today is not in a position to threaten Israel. Iran has officially declared as its main foreign policy concept and goal the destruction of the “Zionist entity,” as they call us. Therefore, we are trying to focus on the actions of Iran, Hezbollah, the pro-Iranian militia in Lebanon, which, again, is very actively involved in Syria. Russia does not pursue such a goal, and everything else does not really concern us,” Lieberman explained.

But still, if the defenses delivered by Russia to Syria open fire on Israel, "they will be destroyed."

“We are not looking for adventures, we are not looking for any unnecessary conflicts or friction, but we will defend ourselves very firmly, we will defend our sovereignty and the safety of our citizens,” the minister emphasized.

Lieberman said that Israel highly appreciates the decisions of US President Donald Trump regarding this country.

“The United States is our main strategic ally, it acts in accordance with its interests. We deeply appreciate President Trump's decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This, of course, is one of the achievements, one of the milestones in our history. And we treat this as a very, very important event. In general, traditionally relations between Jerusalem and Washington have always been very close, we act in full coordination. Even when we disagree on certain issues, we always clearly explain our position. Of course, I repeat once again, the US withdrawal from the agreement on the Iranian nuclear program, the transfer of the embassy to Jerusalem - we definitely welcome and highly appreciate this,” the politician said.

He also praised the relations between Israel and Russia, which, he said, help to avoid direct conflicts in Syria.

“Our consultations with Russia over the past 6 years have helped to avoid direct conflicts and friction in Syria. And we will continue to maintain these open lines with Russia. We hope that in the future we will be able to avoid unnecessary roughness and maintain normal, transparent, adequate relations,” Lieberman said.

Recall 8 May Donald Tramp announced US withdrawal from the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and instructed the US Department of the Treasury to restore sanctions against Tehran in the near future.
