Immigration intensifies screening of potential refugees abroad

Since February 1, new procedures have been introduced to ensure that all individuals who are applying for refugee status undergo similar scrutiny. Special attention will be paid to family members who, while living abroad, want to be reunited with another refugee in the United States.

What additional procedures a refugee should go through is determined by the Department of Homeland Security. This is done to verify that persons who arrive in the United States do not pose a threat to the security and welfare of the United States.

New security measures include:

• All refugees must undergo interdepartmental inspections, as well as inspections that other groups of refugees undergo.
• A refugee must submit his I-590 form, a registration form that classifies him as a refugee, in support of the main I-730 refugee form. Refugee petition in the review process. USCIS or the State Department will contact applicants directly to request this information.
