City under siege: clashes break out in Mexico after drug lord El Chapo's son is detained

In the city of Culiacan in northern Mexico, police used guns to detain one of the sons of drug trafficker Joaquin Guzman, nicknamed “El Chapo” (Shorty), convicted in the United States. However, later Ovidio Guzman was released so as not to endanger people’s lives, writes Air force.

When the son of a drug trafficker was detained, who, after the arrest of his father, is considered a key figure in the Sinaloa cartel, shootouts broke out between government security forces and members of this structure.

Judging by media reports and footage from the streets of Kuliakan, the city plunged into chaos. Presumably, members of the cartel tried to recapture Guzman from the police and military. The record shows how the militants patrol the city in pickups with machine guns. It was reported that members of the cartel took three soldiers hostage.

During the shootings with the use of large-caliber weapons, several cars were blown up. There is no exact data on the victims.

A few hours after Guzman’s detention, Security Minister Alfonso Duraso announced that the gangster had been released. This decision was made to save lives, he added.

According to the official version, Guzman was discovered and detained by a police patrol, after which members of his cartel began to attack the security forces in order to recapture their boss.

It turned out that amid the chaos, prisoners escaped from the local prison - the cartel tried to divert the attention of the police in order to recapture its leader.

Who is Shorty

Joaquin Guzman, the father of the detained and released gangster, was the head of one of Mexico's most powerful cartels, the Sinaloa cartel, which accounted for a quarter of all drug traffic into the United States through Mexico.

Guzman was first arrested in Guatemala in the 1993 year and was held in the specially guarded prison of Puente Grande, from where he managed to escape in the 2001 year by hiding in a laundry basket. For 13 years he was at large, then he was again arrested.

The second time Guzman Sr. escaped from a Mexican prison in the summer of 2015, using a tunnel specially dug for him with lighting, ventilation and stairs. Huacan spent six months on the run, but in January of the 2016 he was again detained.

In 2017, Mexico agreed to extradite the drug dealer only after the US prosecutor promised that he would go to Guzman. will not be applied the death penalty.

17 July 2019 years Shorty was sentenced by an American court to life imprisonment and 30 more years in prison.
