Ecstasy officially approved for use in the treatment of mental disorders
Australia became the first country in the world to legalize psychedelic drugs for the treatment of acute mental disorders. We are talking about MDMA (ecstasy) and psilocybin. Writes about it Ukrainian Truth.

As of July 1, psychiatrists in Australia will be able to use ecstasy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. Psilocybin will treat depression.
Although both drugs are banned in the country, they will be allowed to be used for medical purposes.

This was done due to the lack of alternatives to effective treatment options for mental disorders. The reason was that, according to preliminary data, these drugs may be unique for medical use, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said.
Drugs can be obtained only on the prescription of psychiatrists.
True, cost can be a hindrance for many patients with PTSD and depression. A full course of treatment will cost about $16,5 thousand.
It should be noted that research on the use of psychedelic substances in the treatment of mental illness is just beginning. The long-term benefits and risks of their use are not yet known, so it is not predictable how long patient improvements will last.

“This is a fundamental step in psychiatry over the past 70 years. Psychedelics provide profound mood changes,” said Mike Musker, a member of the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Research and Education Group at the University of South Australia.
Although the TGA has stated that the therapeutic value of the chemicals has not been established. The limitations they place on their use, and the known benefits and risks, make the approval worthwhile. Outside the narrow medical field, both MDMA and psilocybin remain illegal in Australia.
