The conservative party secured 364 from 650 seats in the House of Commons.

This is the biggest victory of the Conservative Party since the 1987 of the year, when Margaret Thatcher also won with a huge advantage.

“We are the government of the people,” Conservative leader Boris Johnson said in London as predictions of a large Tory parliamentary majority were confirmed. He called his victory historic and promised to “work day and night” to earn the trust of voters.

The main rivals of the conservatives, the Laborites, led by Jeremy Corbin, have so far received 203 mandates, the Scottish National Party - 48, the Liberal Democratic - 11, the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party - 8, the Wales Party - 4 mandate and the green ones - 1.

According to critics, the reason for the defeat was, first of all, Corbyn’s reluctance to take a clear position on Brexit, and secondly, the extreme left-wing course of the “Corbynites” by British standards.

The Tories got the majority in the many former labor districts in the north and in the center of the country, where voters traditionally voted for Labor, but in the 2016 referendum of the year, they mostly supported leaving the European Union.

70-year-old Jeremy Corbin himself, at the announcement of the results of the elections in his London district, said that he would not lead the party to the next election, that is, he would leave his post.

On Friday morning, December 13, Corbin, without giving up his promise, announced that he would remain the party leader for a period of understanding the election results. How much the process of reflection can take, he did not say.

Observers notice that now the Laborites are waiting for a rather long and painful process of rethinking their policies, which the voters rejected.

According to Korbin, the election results were a big disappointment for Labor, but the party, in his opinion, went to them with the right program.

“Brexit has polarized positions in the political debate; it has replaced normal political debate. And that, I admit, was reflected in the results that the Labor Party showed across the country,” Corbyn said.

The EU's response is essentially: "If you want a deal quickly, we can get it done, but on our terms."

After that, it will be possible to discuss what proportion of sovereignty and control the UK will really regain if Johnson has to agree to comply with European environmental standards, labor laws and so on.

The EU hopes that Johnson, having secured a majority in parliament, will say: “Okay, I know I said about 2020, but that was too ambitious. Let's take a little more time and get a truly comprehensive and meaningful deal between Britain and the EU."

That is, they hope that Johnson’s big advantage in parliament will be a softer brexit.

Today EU leaders gather in Brussels and we can count on them to say: “We are ready, we want negotiations, so let’s start.”

Scots success

The Scottish National Party, whose main point in the program is the early holding of a new referendum on Scottish independence, won 48 from 59 Scottish counties.

The leader of the SNP and the head of the Scottish autonomy government, Nikola Sturgeon, said at the end of the election that they give the party the mandate to seek a second referendum on independence.

“Scotland has made it very clear: we don’t want Boris Johnson in power, and we don’t want to leave the European Union,” Sturgeon said.

The frustration of liberal democrats

The Liberal Democratic Party hoped to gain a significant number of seats in parliament, betting on the general dissatisfaction of the two leaders of the largest parties and on opponents of Brexit, of which there are many in the country. Its leader, Joe Swinson, said that if the libdem wins, Brexit will be stopped.

However, the liberal democrats eventually lost one seat in parliament, winning only 11. Moreover, Joe Swinson lost in her constituency and will no longer be the party leader.

Pound Strengthens

As soon as the exit polls were announced on the evening of 12 December, according to which the Tories won a landslide victory, the British pound jumped against both the US dollar and the euro.

The pound against the dollar rose by 2,7% and exceeded the mark of 1,35 dollars per pound. In relation to the euro, the exchange rate grew by almost 2%.

By Friday morning there was a slight correction, but the pound still costs significantly more than in the last month and a half, when it kept within the 1,28-1,30 US dollar.
