Calexit: California is preparing a referendum on leaving the United States
Fusion reported on the initiative of the investor and co-founder of Hyperloop One, Shervin Pishevar, who proposed initiating the withdrawal of California from the United States in response to the victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election. His idea was supported by some influential businessmen from Silicon Valley.
Residents of the state can learn more about this initiative on the website. yescalifornia.org. The social networks are running hashtags #Calexit and #Caleavefornia, in support of the campaign.
“The state can take advantage of its economic advantage and, by cutting revenues to the federal budget, provoke changes in the political system of the state. For example, put an end to the institution of the electoral college, ”writes Brown.
The investor himself compared Trump's victory with the coming to power of Adolf Hitler:
“Everyone is deeply surprised that our next president is a TV presenter who allows himself to be sexist and racist. His supporters say that he is a legitimately elected president, but after all, Hitler came to power under the law. This is a very dark and frightening page in the history of our country. And I do not think that since he won the election, we should put up with it. ”
According to the author, among the elite of Silicon Valley, Pishevar is not the only one who considers going out of the country as a good idea: “The inhabitants of Silicon Valley like to imagine a world that is not influenced by political forces,” writes Brown.
Pishevara was supported by Ben Hah, founder of Cheezburger website, Mark Hemenon, the head of Design, and David Maureen, founder of Path messenger.
Some proponents of independence have already have created your channel in Slack to coordinate efforts. However, many have criticized the idea of Pishevara, the author writes Fusion.
“Pishevar envisions California secession more in theory than in practice. According to him, dialogue about this is a litmus test for America and “a test of the political system” so that other Americans will accept the ideas of IT entrepreneurs about what the country should be.”
For California to withdraw from the United States, other states must ratify this decision.
"Pishevar hopes that this will not come to this, but otherwise the state should become an independent state," writes Brown.
“Trump's supporters could theoretically support California’s independence.” It will be an interesting scenario that at any other time would be impossible. It will scare everyone. The chances that both California residents and residents of other parts of the country will support the decision on state independence are very high, ”Pishevar said.
According to the investor, his idea is ephemeral so far and he is ready to listen to any advice on how to bring it to life. He promised to soon provide more details about his plan, writes Brown:
"Shervin Pishevar does not just offer to gain independence, he insists on the cessation of economic support for the federal budget."
Shortly after the victory of Trump, Pishevar announced that he was leaving the board of trustees of the Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs of the Fullbright Program.
With a heavy heart, I have to announce the resignation of the new US President Donald Tampa 21 in January 2017. I cannot continue the service with good intentions under his leadership. It was an honor to serve my country.
The election of Donald Trump alarmed other well-known Silicon Valley businessmen:
“Even as a presidential candidate, he ignored calls for a more balanced approach to data encryption, attacked Apple for its unwillingness to cooperate with the FBI and hack the iPhone of the San Bernardino shooter, and also jokingly suggested that Russia should carry out cyberattacks against the United States,” Brown says.
“However, supporters of the California office are missing an important point: Clinton could have won in direct elections, but, nevertheless, a very large part of the American voters supported Trump’s candidacy, according to whose opinion the electors voted,” writes Brown.
“Trump will have to make a lot of effort to win the Silicon Valley location. On the other hand, he always has Peter Thiel on hand, ”concludes Brown.
If the referendum petition gets enough votes, it can take place in the spring of 2019.
