According to authorities, heavy rains led to chaos, and the north of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were hit hard by heavy rains.

In Patna, the coastal capital of Bihar and home to about 2 million people, residents said they were wading through waist-deep water to go buy basics like food and water.

65-year-old Ranjeev Kumar, a resident of the Ashiyana district in Patna, said that the entire territory of the city was flooded.

“The government is not doing anything, and the situation here is very serious,” he said.

The rescue team urgently evacuated Deputy Chief Minister Bihar Sushil Modi from his flooded house in Patna.

Saket Kumar Singh, said that he was stuck for four days in a house that was flooded with water on 2 feet (0,6 m).

“There was no electricity and even though I had money, I was helpless,” Singh said.

In the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India, monsoon rains destroyed more than 800 houses and plots of agricultural land were submerged.

Data released by the Federal Ministry of the Interior show that as of September 29, 1673 people died as a result of floods and heavy rains this year.

Authorities said that many of the deaths were caused by the collapse of walls and buildings, including in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, a western state in which 2019 flood-related deaths were recorded in 371.

“The risk of old or weak structures collapsing increases during heavy rains, like what happened this time,” Chandrakant Sharma, a flood expert with the relief department in Uttar Pradesh state, told Reuters.
