Destructive wildfires continue to destroy California, but the state’s problem is not only fire, but thick smoke.

Because of the smoke from the fires, San Francisco is almost invisible, which is located more than 140 miles (225 km) from the place of burning, writes Time.

Marc Stokes, a town resident, has published Instagram two photos of San Francisco: one was taken two weeks ago, and the second last Saturday (November 10). The first photo is a bright and clear picture of the city in the background of the sunset; in the second picture of the city is almost invisible because of the thick smoke from the fires that enveloped it.

Air quality in the San Francisco area currently ranges from “unhealthy” to “very unhealthy”, according to data from an air pollution control agency. In the area before November 20, an air pollution warning is valid.

Stokes, working for Alcatraz Island, said the air quality in San Francisco has deteriorated significantly since he took both photos. On Tuesday, he said, he could not see how boats approach the island. At the moment, the island is closed to visitors.

Stokes wears the N95 mask to protect against polluted air, but according to him, he still suffers from headaches, sore throat and dry mouth due to poor air quality.

He also noted that it is almost impossible to buy a mask in San Francisco, this product diverges very quickly.

Officials advise residents of the city, especially children and people with respiratory diseases, to stay indoors whenever possible, closing doors and windows. Many schools in the area are closed due to air quality problems.
