For 6 years, Russia in 16 times reduced investment in US public debt
Russia has reduced its investment in US government debt to $ 10,8 billion. This writes Interfax.
According to the US Treasury Department, in June 2019 Russia reduced its investment in US Treasuries by $ 1,18 billion to $ 10 848 billion compared to $ 12 024 billion a month earlier.
Investments in long-term securities amounted to $ 5 296 billion at the end of June, the figure remained virtually unchanged over the month. Meanwhile, investments in short-term USTs fell by about $ 1,22 billion.
The situation in which the volume of investments in short-term bonds exceeds investments in long-term securities is uncharacteristic for the data of the US Department of Finance both in the Russian Federation and in most other countries of the world.
Russia began to sharply reduce investments in American government bonds in April last year, when, against the backdrop of tough anti-Russian sanctions, Russian investments in US Treasuries fell by almost half - from $96,1 billion to $48,7 billion. In May, the figure fell more than threefold, to $14,9 billion, after which Russia left the list of 33 countries that are the largest holders of American government debt. At the same time, back in 2013, Russian investments in US Treasuries amounted to $164,3 billion, which is 16 times more than now.

Meanwhile, Japan significantly increased its portfolio of American debt obligations - by almost $22 billion, to $1,122 trillion. China, in turn, increased investments for the first time since February 2019, but by only $2,38 billion, to $1,112 trillion. Thus, Japan became the world's largest holder of American government debt for the first time since May 2017.
At the end of June, third place was occupied by Great Britain ($341,1 billion), fourth by Brazil ($311,7 billion), and fifth by Ireland ($262,1 billion). The top 10 holders of US Treasuries also include Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and Belgium.
The total volume of non-residents' investments in US Treasuries in June increased by $ 97,2 billion, to $ 6 trillion 636,3 billion. Of this amount, more than $ 4,141 trillion belonged to governments or central banks of foreign states.
