US Congress endorsed hellish sanctions against Russia: what awaits Moscow

The United States House of Representatives adopted an amendment to the defense budget for the 2020 year, including a ban on conducting any transactions with the Russian government debt, writes Columnist.

The authors of the initiative - Democrats from California Maxine Waters and Bradley Sherman, reports RBC.

“This amendment provides for real serious sanctions against the Russian Federation, according to which no US citizen can enter into additional transactions with Russian sovereign debt,” Sherman said during a speech to Congress.

“It (the amendment to the defense budget - ed.) also provides a mechanism for lifting these sanctions if the administration concludes that Russia did not interfere in American elections during at least one election cycle, and if Congress agrees with this conclusion,” – he added.

According to him, Washington needs a serious mechanism that will punish Moscow for what it did in the previous elections and keep it in check.

“This amendment does just that,” Sherman added.

At the same time, the draft budget itself has not yet been approved. Finally, it will have to be signed by US President Donald Trump after the document is approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Later, Anton Morozov, a member of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that “the United States is coming up with sanctions, restrictions and ridiculous accusations” against the Kremlin.

“Americans are always driven by the desire to make money. And for this reason they come up with sanctions, restrictions and ridiculous accusations against Russia. Apparently they became interested in freezing this Russian government debt and removing their citizens from transactions with it. Actually, they provided a substantive basis for this case,” he said in a commentary RT.

Morozov also focused on the fact that Washington did not cancel the restrictive measures against Moscow because of the situation with the Kremlin’s interference in the American elections.

“We have stated many times that Russia did not interfere in the internal affairs of the United States. But nevertheless, the American information space is still dominated by the opinion that our country is guilty. Such ridiculous accusations are often used to justify their actions, which are actually caused by the desire to extract some kind of profit and benefit,” the State Duma deputy concluded.

The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, also responded to the corresponding US actions.

“The Russian Federation is monitoring the discussion of new sanctions in the United States, but it is too early to comment on anything,” said Vladimir Putin’s representative.
