US military jokingly offered to bomb New York in the New Year

“If necessary, we are ready to drop something much, much larger,” this was posted on Twitter by the US Department of Defense’s Joint Strategic Command. A peculiar joke referred to the crystal ball falling ceremony, which takes place annually in New York on New Year's Eve.

The US strategic command unexpectedly joked on Monday on the topic of American military power, writes NBC News. Hinting at the "big" ball drop ceremony in Times Square at midnight on New Year's Eve, the team's account tweeted: "If necessary, we are ready to drop something much, much bigger on New York City."

For this tweet, the military had to apologize publicly.

The joke was accompanied by an ambiguous video about stealth planes, in which the words “stealthy, ready and deadly” flashed. The tweet urged followers to “watch until the end!” Those who watched saw two bombs fired from the plane and several powerful explosions.

The tweet was later deleted, and in a subsequent post on the account, the command cited “poor taste” and noted that the first post “does not reflect the values” of the department. “We apologize,” the message said.

A spokesman said that the video shows the test results of non-nuclear bombs.

“The message, which has since been deleted, was part of a Year in Review series that showed the team's priorities: strategic deterrence, decisive response and combat-ready forces. The video shows us dropping conventional explosive devices of mass destruction (MOP) at a test site in the United States,” a command spokesman said.

MOPs are massive bombs designed for bunkers and concrete buildings.
