The American wanted to blow up a 90-kilogram bomb on election day

In the town of Tappen, north of New York City, arrested were 56-year-old Paul Rosenfeld, who was accused of making a bomb weighing just under 100 kg and intending to blow it up on the next election day in the US capital.

As stated in the petition for the issuance of an arrest warrant for Rosenberg, released from the pen of the FBI investigator Jonathan Welsh, in August and September a resident of Pennsylvania received letters and SMS from an unfamiliar person.

It followed from them that the sender intends to manufacture an explosive device, take it to Washington and blow up 6 in November on the National Mall.

The recipient of this correspondence forwarded it to the FBI. It quickly determined from the cell phone from which the text messages were sent that they were sent by Paul Rosenfeld, who lives in Tappan. The name of the town, which has just over 6 thousand inhabitants, comes from the language of the local Indian tribe and is translated as “icy water.”

On October 9, a local judge issued a search warrant for Rosenfeld’s house. On the same day, law enforcement officers stopped the car of the suspect, took Rosenfeld to a nearby police station and interrogated him.

He confirmed that he was the owner of the mobile phone from which the specified SMS had been sent, and said that he had ordered a large amount of black powder, which had been delivered to an address in New Jersey and brought to Tappen.

According to Rosenfeld, he made and tested several small bombs, and also made a bigger device, filled it with 8 with pounds (about 4 kg) of black powder and hid it in his basement.

He also said that he inserted into it components that ensure that he himself will die from the explosion of his hellish machine, and that he was going to put it into action in Washington.

Cleroterianism

According to Rosenfeld, the purpose of his planned terrorist attack was to draw attention to the doctrine of “sortition”, or kleroterianism.

The latter term comes from the ancient Greek "kleroterion" - a device for drawing lots, which is known to have been used to select many officials in ancient Athens during its democratic period.

There is a short essay online on this topic by a man named Paul Rosenfeld. It was posted in March 2015 on the website Equality By Lot, which calls itself a "cleroterian blog."

The essay contains arguments in favor of the main postulate of their ideology, which states that leaders should be chosen not by a majority vote, as in democratic countries, but by lot.

As the author writes, this method would seem to correspond to common sense, and yet the blog “Equality by Lot” at the last count has only 344 subscribers, that is, we are talking about “a statistically invisible group on a planet with 7 billion inhabitants.”

The author of the essay concludes from this that “we must somehow convince enough people for our movement to gain fame. For this we need an extremely effective argument...”

Obviously, the hellish machine made by Rosenfeld, which in fact contained not 4 kg of black powder, and 91 kg, should serve as such an argument. So, at least, the FBI investigator Welsh wrote to the judge, who said that a plywood box containing a functioning explosive device had been found in the basement of the suspect. It was filled with 200 pounds of black powder, empty containers from which were lying in the house.

The FBI experts enlightened the bomb with an X-ray machine and found an electric fuse inside it that would ignite its powder filling.

On October 10, FBI sappers carried a hellish car from the basement and took it to a safe place.

As noted in a press release from the federal prosecutor's office of the Southern District of New York, an explosion in such a busy place would lead to the death of innocent people and indescribable destruction. The suspect could have become the worst homegrown terrorist after Timothy McVey, who blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995 and subsequently executed it.

Rosenfeld is officially charged with the illegal manufacture of an explosive device, for which he faces up to 10 years in prison, and transportation of explosive between the states (also up to 10 years).
