The virtual world and human avatars: Facebook launches the metaverse

On December 9, Meta (formerly Facebook) announced that the Horizon Worlds metaverse is now available to anyone over the age of 18 in the US and Canada. More details about this project were told by the publication CNBC.

The Horizon Worlds service is a virtual space where you can create your own three-dimensional avatar and wander around the animated virtual world. To use the service, you need an Oculus virtual reality headset.

In 2021, Horizon Worlds launched a beta version for users who received invitations to join the virtual world. Now you don't need to invite them.

The wider launch of Horizon Worlds is an important step for Facebook, which officially changed its name to Meta in October... The company's new name is based on the sci-fi term "metaverse". According to representatives of Meta, this name describes their vision of working and playing in the virtual world.

In the virtual world, users can play games and interact with other users.

Facebook acquired Oculus for $ 2 billion in 2014 and has since struggled to reach the market beyond niche audiences. The company focuses on technologies, products and services for the metaverse.

In July, the company, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, announced the formation of a team that will work on the metaverse. Two months later, Andrew Bosworth, currently head of the hardware division, was promoted to become CTO from 2022.

In addition, Meta announced in October that it will spend about $ 10 billion next year on developing technologies to create the metaverse.

“Over the next decade, we hope the metaverse will reach a billion people, enable hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers,” Zuckerberg said.
