The US Citizenship and Immigration Services updated a key requirement for obtaining a green card. The change concerns medical examinations that should ensure that the applicant does not have serious health problems that could make him an unacceptable candidate for becoming a lawful permanent resident of the United States. The update will take effect from November 1.

A medical examination is a mandatory requirement for all foreigners applying for a green card. Its results are submitted to USCIS in the form of a completed Form I-693, writes Miami Herald.

According to the latest changes USCIS Policy Guides, The form I-693 must be signed by a civilian surgeon, registered in USCIS.

Make it necessary no later than 60 days before filing a basic application for immigration benefits. In addition, the form will remain valid for biennium, which will start from the date the document was signed by the doctor.

Before these changes, the doctor’s signature did not need to be received so close to the filing date of the application, so many applicants faced the same problem: by the time they were confirmed the right to receive immigration benefits, the I-693 Form was no longer valid. To overcome this obstacle, it was necessary to receive and provide an updated medical report.

“The goal of the new rule is to “increase operational efficiency and reduce the number of applications for the updated Form I-693,” the immigration service said in a statement.

The revised policy extends as much as possible "the period of time that a Form I-693 will be valid while the underlying application is under review by USCIS," the agency said, indicating that its employees will have the opportunity to request a new I-693 within a two-year period. , if they “have reason to believe that the applicant may be unsuitable for health reasons.”

“If fewer requests for updated Forms I-693 are received, delays in processing the underlying application will also be reduced,” USCIS said in a statement.

With more stringent deadlines, it is important that candidates for a green card well timed for laboratory tests or additional examinations required before you submit the results of a medical examination.
