A suspect in the murder of rapper Tupac Shakur has been arrested in the United States: they have been looking for him for 17 years

Former gang leader Dwayne "Kiffie Dee" Davis has been arrested in the United States. He is accused of killing famous rapper Tupac Shakur in 1996, reports with the BBC .

According to prosecutor Mark DiGiacomo, quoted by US media, "there is a strong likelihood that he (Kiffee Dee) is guilty of the murder of Shakur and will be found guilty of murder with a deadly weapon."

Tupac Shakur, 25, was killed in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, while riding in a car with Marion "Suge" Knight Jr., founder and former CEO of Death Row Records. The hip-hop star was shot four times in a drive-by shooting and died in hospital a week later.

The investigation concluded that four people were involved in the murder, but Dwayne "Kiffie Dee" Davis is the only one still alive. “Three other suspects are dead,” police said.

This mysterious murder remained unsolved for 27 years, and investigators and fans of the musician could only guess about the motives and perpetrators of this crime.

“It took many hours, I would say a decade, of homicide to get to where we are today,” the Las Vegas police officer in charge of the homicide investigation told a news conference. “Some people didn’t believe that the murder of Tupac Shakur was important to our police department, but it was, then and now.”

“Our goal has always been to bring to justice those involved in the brutal murder of Tupac. Every life lost is important and remains a priority for the police,” he stressed.

Who was Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur was born in East Harlem, New York. He released his debut album 2Pacalypse Now in 1991.

Tupac, stage name 2Pac, topped the charts with songs such as California Love, All Eyez on Me, Changes and I Ain't Mad at Cha.

His music often addressed social issues such as inequality. The rapper made a significant contribution to the music world. This influence is still felt today, many years after his death. In 2004, the posthumous single Ghetto Gospel, which sampled Elton John's Indian Sunset, reached number one in the UK singles chart.

Tupac has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.

Earlier this year, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making him one of only 12 rap artists to receive the distinction.

He has been the subject of feature films and documentaries, exploring not only his influence on music, but also what happened the night he was killed.

In 2017, Suge Knight - who was with Tupac the night he died - said in a documentary that the rapper may still be alive.

“When Pac died, if he really died...” Knight says during an interview from prison.

The theories and mysteries surrounding his death are one of the reasons why his name still causes such a stir. But for many, Tupac's early death raises questions about what his future career might have been like.

He reportedly once said: "I have very little time left to live; I have some work to do."

Tupac is considered one of the most influential and successful rappers of all time, having greatly influenced hip-hop, especially the West Coast rap scene.

Rapper 50 Cent said that “every rapper who grew up in the 90s owes something to Tupac.”

Kendrick Lamar noted that Tupac's work inspired his own career.
