In Serbia, a seventh-grader staged a mass shooting at a school: 9 people died

The 14-year-old boy shot and killed eight classmates and a security guard and wounded his teacher and six other students when he opened fire in his classroom in Belgrade on May 3 morning, reports Reuters.

Milan Milosevic, the father of a student at the Vladislav Rybnikar Primary School in the Serbian capital, said his daughter was in the classroom where the shots were fired.

“She managed to escape. The boy first shot at the teacher and then started shooting at random,” Milosevic told the TV channel.

Milan Nedeljković, mayor of the central district of Vračar, where the school is located, said doctors were fighting for the teacher's life.

The interior ministry said in a statement that eight children and a security guard were killed, while six children were hospitalized along with a teacher.

The police said that the seventh grader was detained in the schoolyard.

“I saw the guard lying under the table. I saw two girls with blood on their shirts. They say the shooter was quiet and a good student. He recently joined their class,” added Milosevic, who rushed to the school after the mass shooting.

Officers in helmets and body armor cordoned off the area around the school.

“I saw children running out of school, screaming. Parents came, they were in a panic. Then I heard three shots, ”said a student from a secondary school located next door.

The injured are being treated and the motive for the shooting is being investigated, according to a police statement.

Sinisa Ducic, acting director of a pediatric clinic in Belgrade treating the three victims, said one girl had a head injury and underwent surgery.

Mass shooting in Serbia

Mass shootings are relatively rare in Serbia, which has very strict gun laws and has issued several amnesties for owners to turn in or register illegal weapons.

But since the wars and turmoil of the 1990s, the western Balkans have been flooded with hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons.

In Serbia's deadliest shootout since then, Ljubiša Bogdanović killed 14 people in the central village of Velika Ivanka in 2013, and Nikola Radosavljevic killed nine and wounded five in the eastern village of Jabukovac on July 27, 2007.

Rade Sefer killed six guests at his son's wedding in the northern city of Senta in 2015, and a year later, Sinisa Zlatic killed five people and wounded twenty-two with machine guns in a cafe in Zitiste, also to the north.

All attackers were adults.
