Teenager burns 80% of his body due to dangerous new TikTok challenge

Dangerous new 'A big boom' TikTok challenge inviting people to use a lighter and spray paint nearly killed 16-year-old Heritage High School student Mason Dark from North Carolina, reports wral.

The essence of the challenge is to set fire to the paint with a lighter when it is sprayed from a pressurized can.

The teenager received burns almost 80% of the body. Dark, an outstanding athlete and football player, is now in the burn center at the University of North Carolina.

"He's unrecognizable, unrecognizable," said Holly Dark, the boy's mother.

She said that on April 23, her son used a lighter and spray paint.

“Everyone heard a loud roar, and then Mason ran out and started taking off his shirt,” Dark said.

Mason jumped into the river to put out the fire on himself.

“We learned after the operation that he had third-degree burns. They look like the letter T on his back, and this is because he took off his shirt, and then it got stuck and stuck, ”Dark said. .

Mason was wrapped up like a mummy in the burn center. The boy was bandaged from head to toe.

“Until yesterday, we didn’t know that he actually had 76% of his body burned,” Dark said.

On April 26, Mason underwent skin graft surgery to begin the long healing process. Dark said it's like seeding a lawn—the healing process is very slow. She added that her son looks terrible after undergoing operations.

Mason is expected to remain at the UNC burn center for at least six months.

“This is all the result of a TikTok challenge,” Dark said. “I think kids have been doing it for a long time.”

Holly Dark created the GoFundMe page on behalf of her son. The fund raised $15 of its $583 goal.
