Cherkasov's lawyer noted that his client had told the Brazilian authorities that he wanted to be extradited to Russia. In the Russian Federation, a criminal case was initiated against him on charges of drug trafficking. According to the Russian authorities, Cherkasov was a major drug trafficker who supplied heroin from Afghanistan, writes Radio Liberty.

Sergei Cherkasov was detained in June 2022 in the Netherlands. According to Dutch intelligence, the Russian posed as Brazilian citizen Victor Muller Ferreira and tried to get an internship at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. Cherkasov was expelled to Brazil, where he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for forging documents, writes DW.
