“The law sends a clear message to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence or human trafficking that New York is with you. The city is ensuring that vulnerable people can access what they need without putting their lives at risk,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“Survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence or human trafficking often struggle with psychological trauma. I am proud to support legislation that provides survivors with the treatment they need without worrying about their next paycheck,” said City Councilor Eric Ulrich.

According to the law, employees who are victims of violence may take time off to use the services of a crisis center or other support programs. They can get the time they need to move, enroll children in a new school, or take other actions necessary to protect family members.

The law provides an opportunity to visit lawyers or social services, to receive the necessary advice.

According to city officials, employers with five or more employees working more than 80 hours in a calendar year must provide paid vacation and sick leave for their employees. Employers who have fewer 5 employees must provide unpaid leave and sick leave.

“The accrual of paid vacation or sick leave is 1 hour of absence for every 30 hours of work, up to 40 hours per calendar year, and is calculated from the first day of work. Employees can begin using accrued vacation 120 days after their first day of work,” the mayor’s spokesman said.
