In Montana, a bridge collapsed when a train passed over it: dangerous substances poured into the river

On June 24, a train derailed on a railway bridge crossing the Yellowstone River in Stillwater County, Montana. The bridge collapsed, several railway cars ended up in the river. The incident is fraught with a spill of hazardous substances, reports KTVQ.

In Stillwater County, the Yellowstone County Water Stations are implementing emergency protective measures.

Water treatment plants in Laurel, Billings and Lockwood, as well as irrigation canal companies, put in place emergency protective measures on the morning of June 24, including closing the main gates, due to a possible spill of dangerous substances into the Yellowstone River in Stillwater County.

The Territory Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Parks said the river would be closed and asked boaters to avoid the area, reports CBS.

The sheriff's office initially reported that several tanker trucks were "damaged and leaking petroleum products near the Yellowstone River." The sheriff's office later shared updated information saying eight railroad cars were affected, containing "bitumen and a second substance that officials are working to confirm." Bitumen contains a full bouquet of carcinogens. They have a high molecular weight and are almost completely transferred from oil to the heaviest fraction of distillation - bitumen.

A press release from officials said the Yellowstone County DES is asking residents to conserve water. So far, there are no reports of a threat to life or property in Yellowstone County.

“Stillwater County Emergency Services, Sheriff's Office, Commissioners, Columbus Fire and Rescue, Montana Rail Link and other state agencies are on scene. Additionally, Stillwater and Montana Rail Link counties are coordinating with federal response agencies. We have officially established a unified command and are using an incident command system,” Stillwater County Emergency Management said in a press release.

The joint command is working together to determine the most appropriate steps to safely resolve this crash.

Authorities are asking everyone to stay away from areas around the Yellowstone River Railroad Bridge located around Reed Point.
