Whether it's swiping through TikTok or playing Candy Crush, many of us are so obsessed with our phones that we feel lost without them. But this obsessive mania can take its toll on our eyes: research shows that spending too much time in front of a screen can increase the risk of myopia (nearsightedness).
To help solve this problem, Apple will launch a new feature.
A tool called Screen Distance will track where your iPhone is in relation to your face and alert you if it's too close.
How to enable the new feature
“Increasing the viewing distance of a device can help children reduce their risk of developing nearsightedness and gives adult users the ability to reduce eye strain when using digital technology,” Apple explained earlier this month at the Apple WWDC 2023 event in Cupertino, California.

The new tool will use the TrueDepth camera, which projects thousands of invisible dots onto your face and analyzes them to create a proximity map of your face.
"Screen Distance in Screen Time uses the TrueDepth camera to encourage users to move their device further away if it is less than 30cm away from their face for an extended period of time," Apple said.
Unfortunately, this feature is not yet available, but it will appear in the iOS 17 update, which is expected to be released in September.

When the feature launches, you can turn it on by opening the Settings app and then Screen Time.
In the 'Limit Usage' section, click 'Screen Distance'. Your iPhone will explain the feature before letting you click Continue and Turn on Screen Distance.
Because this feature uses the TrueDepth camera, it will only be available on iPhone XS and newer models.
Screen Distance isn't the only new feature to look forward to in iOS 17.
