In Illinois, begin to issue a driver's license of the new sample Real ID

From April, you will receive a Real ID in all 138 driver service centers throughout the state.

Beginning in October 1 2020, Illinois residents will no longer be able to use their current driver's license and identity cards. According to old-fashioned documents, it will not be possible to use domestic flights or receive services at federal institutions.

However, residents of the state have the opportunity to choose - to issue a driver's license or identity card. State citizens will still be able to use a passport instead of a driver's license when boarding a plane or receiving federal services.

People who want to get a Real ID must come to the driver service center and provide proof of identity, social security number and handwritten signature, as well as two documents confirming the fact of residence in Illinois. A full list of documents can be found on the site realid.ilsos.gov.

The paperwork for the new sample will cost $ 30 for a driver's license and $ 20 for a state ID. However, they can not be updated by mail. New cards will be issued in such points of express service, like Chicago, Orland Park, Wheaton and Rockford.

The transfer of staff to documents of the new sample will cost the office of the Secretary of State approximately $ 3 million.

Real ID implementation law was to adopt 2005 Congress. This decision was made after the September 11 attack, in order to increase the security of identity cards. Currently 39 states, including Illinois, abide by the law.
